Arrow is the only national charity dedicated to helping medical researchers improve bone marrow and stem cell transplant outcomes for patients.

Our objective is to support grass-roots research, and we have often been the first funders of medical research that has gone on to receive larger foundation or government grants.

The key areas of research we have funded have included:

  • Graft-versus-host disease (the major cause of death in post-transplant patients)
  • Haploidentical transplants (where patients do not have a well-matched bone marrow donor)

The research landscape is ever-changing, and we will consider applications from a wide range of disciplines where the project has the potential to improve bone marrow transplant patient outcomes. We invite you to explore our research pages here, or send an email to info@arrow.org.au for more information.

PhD Scholarships

Our PhD scholarships, funded with the support of theĀ Hawkesbury Canoe Classic Association and Liverpool Catholic Club, are one of the ways we support research in the fields of bone marrow transplant and stem cell therapy.

Each year, in collaboration with the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ), we offer a scholarship to a PhD candidate whose research focuses on improving outcomes of blood and marrow transplantation for patients by making the procedure safer, reducing the risk of relapse after transplant, and proactively managing long-term health issues and side effects from transplant. This includes research in the following focus areas:

  • Allogeneic transplants
  • Graft-versus-host disease
  • Alternative donor approaches
  • Prevention of infectious complications
  • Management of long-term issues
  • Disease recurrence

The research work must also align with the purpose and objectives of the HSANZ.

Applications have now closed for our 2024 PhD scholarship. Please check back here later for future opportunities.
