Sydney Marathon – Laura’s run for Francesca

Laura Garbo recently completed her first major Marathon, an incredible achievement made even more meaningful by her decision to run in support of Arrow, raising over $2,000 for stem cell transplant patients. The Arrow cause is close to Laura’s heart, adding extra significance to her first Sydney Marathon which she described as “a fabulous experience, in the most amazing atmosphere”, and which culminated in a “greeting at the finish line by the best support crew ever”.
Read Laura’s inspiring story below of what, and more importantly who, motivated her to take on this challenge:
“Running the Sydney Marathon was more than just a personal challenge for me, it was a tribute to someone extraordinary. Back in 1996, my dear friend Francesca was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. After several unsuccessful rounds of therapy, she became one of the first patients to undergo a stem cell transplant, which at the time was still considered experimental. What struck me then, and continues to inspire me today, is her unwavering positivity and strength.
Francesca not only recovered from leukemia but also overcame a debilitating neurological virus. Through dance she regained her balance, and through pottery, she restored her fine motor skills. That passion evolved into a remarkable career as a ceramic artist. Her work is now described as “a social art in the truest sense of the word, capable of alleviating suffering.” She creates pieces that speak directly to those facing illness and hardship, reminding us that the journey itself holds beauty and meaning.
Her motto “Even when you think everything is lost, just go further, push forward, one step at a time” became my mantra throughout marathon training. Every kilometre was a way to honour her resilience and celebrate the life-saving work of Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation.
Playing a small part in Arrow’s fundraising efforts allowed me to celebrate Francesca and support others walking a similar path. I’m deeply grateful to Arrow for the opportunity and for the incredible work they do every day to bring hope, healing, and strength to so many.”

Laura thoroughly enjoyed taking on the Sydney Marathon challenge and encourages others to get involved. She says “If you’ve ever thought about taking on a challenge for a cause, I wholeheartedly encourage you to consider fundraising with Arrow in one of the 2026 Sydney Marathon events. Whether it’s the full marathon, the 10K, or the 5K Mini Marathons, every step you take helps someone take theirs. And you won’t be doing it alone: the Arrow fundraising team is incredibly supportive, passionate, and encouraging every step of the way. It’s a powerful way to make a difference, honour someone you love, and be part of something truly meaningful.”
