Continuing education for nurse Sherry Jia who will soon commence a graduate certificate in cancer nursing

We’re pleased to be able to support the continuing education of Sherry Jia, a nurse from the Cancer Centre at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

Sherry is the most recent recipient of the Professor Geoffrey Driscoll Nursing Scholarship which will help fund Sherry as she completes the Graduate Certificate of Cancer Nursing through the Australian College of Nursing.

Sherry is a dedicated nurse with extensive clinical experience in apheresis (the collection of cells through a process that looks much like a blood donation), and she has cared for many patients undergoing stem cell collection and those affected by haematological malignancies requiring specialized treatments.

Sherry is also involved in the administration of cellular therapies and is especially looking forward to completing the Cellular Therapies module of the course, which is sponsored through our scholarship. She shared, “The Cellular Therapies module aligns with my current role, offering in-depth knowledge that will allow me to refine my clinical practice and better support patients through their treatment journey.”

Sherry adds, “I am deeply committed to improving patient outcomes. The Graduate Certificate in Cancer Nursing will enhance my ability to provide evidence-based specialised care to patients undergoing bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. Additionally, I am eager to apply the insights gained from this course to [help] educate colleagues and improve care strategies within my unit.”

Why are scholarships like this important?

Why do we support the continuing education of nurses and other health care professionals in the field of bone marrow transplants and cellular therapies? Because this is a highly technical and quickly evolving field, that requires a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve the best in patient care. Everyone we speak to, from nurses and allied health professionals, to researchers, to patients and families, all tell that the complex and flexible care that bone marrow transplant patients receive is part of what makes Australia’s healthcare system so great.

We like to think that we’re part of that process through helping nurses and other allied health professionals continue to grow their skill and their knowledge in the field of bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy so that they can provide better and better care to patients and families.

And that – the improved outcomes for bone marrow transplant patients – that is at the heart of everything we do here at Arrow.

We would like to thank Mrs Jan Driscoll and the Driscoll family for their continued generosity through the Professor Geoffrey Driscoll Nursing Scholarship.
