Driscoll Scholarship supports nursing career development

“This wouldn’t have been possible without Arrow and the Professor Geoffrey Driscoll Nursing Scholarship,” says Charlotte Anderson who has just completed her Graduate Certificate in Cancer Nursing through the Australian College of Nursing.
Charlotte was awarded the scholarship in early 2024, and has just been in touch with us to share her excellent results, including credits, a distinction, and a high distinction.
Charlotte began her training and spent the early days of her nursing career in Launceston, Tasmania, but has since moved back to Hobart where she is now an Associate Nursing Unit Manager (ANUM) at Royal Hobart Hospital. Her unit cares for patients having autologous stem cell transplants, and they also do the “work up” for people needing allogeneic stem cell transplants or CAR T therapy, who then travel across to mainland Australia for their treatment, after which they return to Royal Hobart for their post-transplant care.
When we asked her why she chose to specialise in haematology nursing, Charlotte said, “These patients go through so much. CAR-T and stem cell transplant patients are with us for a very long time, and so you get to build really strong relationships with them and their families. We see them go through such grueling treatments, and it’s great to know that our nursing skills make a difference to their day-to-day experience of that treatment. If what we do can make things just a little bit easier for them, then that’s so satisfying and rewarding.”
Charlotte enjoyed returning to study and “hitting the books again” to complete the Graduate Certificate of Cancer Nursing. She found the course relevant and very valuable to her clinical practice.
One of Charlotte’s goals in completing post graduate studies was to progress into a leadership role, where she could mentor and teach others. With her new role as Associate Nursing Unit Manager, Charlotte has achieved this goal and loves sharing with her peers the knowledge she has gained through the Graduate Certificate of Cancer Nursing.
We at Arrow are pleased to have been part of her successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Cancer Nursing, and we thank the family of Professor Geoffrey Driscoll for funding this program. We look forward to a long association with Charlotte and others who have also received scholarships as they too progress in their nursing careers.
